The 30-second answer
Shreveport and Bossier City are two cities, two parishes and one metro, split by the Red River. Most people who live here cross that river every week without thinking about it.
So the real question isn’t which city is better. It’s which side puts you closer to the places you go most: work, family, church, the gym, the grocery store you actually like. Pick a house by its drive, and the rest mostly sorts itself out.
The river is the whole argument
Shreveport is on the west bank, in Caddo Parish. It’s the bigger city, with the downtown, the Red River District, the big hospitals, I-49 heading south, and neighborhoods that run from 1920s brick bungalows to brand-new subdivisions down south.
Bossier City is on the east bank, in Bossier Parish. It’s home to Barksdale Air Force Base, the Louisiana Boardwalk and a lot of newer construction, and it runs north toward Benton and east toward Haughton.
Bridges tie them together: I-20 and I-220, the downtown bridges, and the Jimmie Davis Bridge to the south. Read our commute guide before you sign anything.
Where the jets are
If you hear a deep rumble that rattles the windows a little, congratulations: you’ve met Barksdale. The base sits on the east side of Bossier City, and the big planes are part of the soundtrack here. Some people love it. Some people buy earplugs. Drive by a house at different times of day and decide for yourself.

Things to do, by side
- Shreveport side: Festival Plaza downtown, home of the Red River Revel arts festival in the fall and Mudbug Madness on Memorial Day weekend; the Shreveport Aquarium and Sci-Port on the riverfront; the R.W. Norton Art Gallery and its gardens.
- Bossier side: the Louisiana Boardwalk for shopping and the river walk, Brookshire Grocery Arena for concerts and games, Cypress Black Bayou up near Benton for the lake.
- Both: Mardi Gras parade season, crawfish everywhere in the spring, and a casino skyline that lights up the river at night.
Check each place’s own website for hours, dates and prices before you go.
Schools, taxes and insurance
Each parish runs its own schools: Caddo Parish Public Schools on the Shreveport side and Bossier Parish Schools on the Bossier side. Zones go by exact address, so check the district’s site for any house you’re looking at. We don’t rank schools.
Property taxes, flood zones and insurance also change by address, not by city. Ask for the real numbers on the real house.
The tiebreaker
Do this once and you’ll know: pick a house, then drive from its front door to work at the hour you’d really leave. Then drive home at 5. If you still like it after I-20 at rush hour, that’s your side of the river.
