Where Barksdale is
Barksdale Air Force Base is on the east side of Bossier City, just off I-220 and Barksdale Boulevard. It’s one of the biggest employers in the area, and when the bombers fly you’ll know it. Your base’s housing and relocation offices are the official source for anything about the base itself; this guide is about the neighborhoods around it.
Where people live
- Bossier City. The shortest drives to the gates, plus the Boardwalk, newer subdivisions and plenty of shopping along Airline Drive. Our Bossier City guide.
- Haughton. East on I-20, a smaller-town feel with an easy run back toward the base. Haughton and Benton.
- Benton. North up LA-3, quieter, with Cypress Black Bayou close by.
- Shreveport. Across the river: older neighborhoods with character, more restaurants, and a longer drive. Cross on I-220 or I-20 and time it at shift change. Our Shreveport guide.

Rent to own on orders: questions to ask
Rent to own can make sense if you expect to stay a few years and want to own without waiting on a bank. It also has to work with military life. Before you sign any agreement, with us or anyone else, ask:
- What happens if I get new orders before I buy? Get the answer in writing.
- How much of what I pay goes toward the purchase, and what happens to it if I leave?
- Who handles repairs, and how fast?
- What’s the purchase price, and when can I buy?
Federal law, the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, gives servicemembers some rights to end leases on orders; your base legal office can explain how it applies to your agreement, and it’s free. Read rent-to-own agreements in Louisiana too.
A local’s survival kit
- Get to know I-220. It’s the loop that makes the base commute painless, most days.
- Your first summer will be hot and humid. Here’s the survival guide.
- Crawfish season is late winter into early summer. Go to a boil when you’re invited. That’s how friends are made here.
- The Barksdale Global Power Museum is open to visitors; check its site for hours and entry rules.
