Winter: parades and the first crawfish
Mardi Gras here is bigger than people expect. Krewes like Centaur and Gemini roll big parades through Shreveport in the weeks before Fat Tuesday, and families stake out spots on the route hours early.
Crawfish season usually starts showing up in late winter, gets good in the spring and fades in early summer. Prices and sizes change week to week, and everyone has an opinion about whose boil is best.
Spring: the sweet spot
March through May is the best weather of the year. Patios fill up, the azaleas show off, and Mudbug Madness takes over Festival Plaza in downtown Shreveport on Memorial Day weekend. Spring is also storm season, so sign up for your parish’s alerts.
Summer: the long, warm hug
June through September is hot and humid. Locals do errands early, live in the A/C at midday, and come back out after dark. Read your first summer here before you sign a lease or move in July.
Fall: festival season
When it finally cools off, the calendar fills up: the Red River Revel arts festival at Festival Plaza in early October, then the State Fair of Louisiana in Shreveport, with rides, livestock shows and fried everything. Football is on every TV.
By late November the Holiday Trail of Lights starts, with Shreveport-Bossier lighting up the river and towns down the road joining in. Natchitoches, about an hour south, is the famous one.
The best month to move
If you can pick, pick October through April. Moving furniture in August is a special kind of punishment. Spring and fall are the sweet spots: mild weather, and you get to see the house in its best and worst moods within a few weeks.
Whatever month it is, Vana can tell you what’s open. Homes go first come, first served. Read how rent to own works, or take the one-minute quiz.
